The Joys of Joining the Gym

When you catch your reflection in a window do you groan?

D’you see a wrinkly pensioner whose energy has flown?

It’s time to join like-minded folk who’re full of optimism

Who run and row and lift and LAUGH to fight the rheumatism

There is no need for Lycra or expensive Nike shoes

We don’t aim to look fashionable; we wear just what we choose

If you have creaky knees and hips there’s no point being bitter

Just exercise for half an hour and go home feeling fitter

Kay Luck,  Write-it Group, U3A Tawa.

U3A Scrabble

Most of us know quite a few four-letter words, including some that we don’t use in polite company.  But how about two-letter words?  Er….  Yes, “er” is one, as are “as” and “it”.  Have you ever heard of “Ba” or “Em”?  Apparently they are, respectively, the eternal spirit in Egyptian mythology and a printer’s measure (equal to twice an “En”).

What can you do with such two-letter words?  If you play Scrabble, the answer is you can score points with them.  I restarted playing the game a few months ago, after an absence of several years, and was surprised to find that serious players wouldn’t be seen at the board without their Scrabble Dictionary and list of two-letter words.  However they’re not so competitive that they won’t lend you their list if you ask nicely.

Tawa U3A has joined forces with its opposite number in Mana and set up a group of Scrabble players who meet once a month on a Friday morning  in someone’s home.  After some refreshments we get down to the serious stuff and split into groups for a game.  It’s good fun and we occasionally find time for a chat in between turns.  We may even learn some new words!

If you’ve played before or just want to have a go you’d be very welcome to join the group.  It’s a great way of exercising the brain rather than the usual one of trying to remember what you came into the kitchen for.
